Time Zone Converter

Pick any two cities and a date, then type a time on either side. The converter accounts for daylight saving time on the date you choose, and flags when the other city is already on tomorrow.

A word about EST, GMT and other abbreviations

Time zone abbreviations are a shorthand, and a slippery one. EST is strictly Eastern Standard Time, UTCโˆ’5, which New York only uses in winter; from March to November the city is on EDT, UTCโˆ’4. Plenty of people write โ€œESTโ€ all year round, which is how a meeting ends up an hour out.

Some abbreviations mean several things at once. CST can be Central Standard Time in the US or China Standard Time. IST is India, Ireland or Israel depending on whoโ€™s writing. BST is British Summer Time to a Londoner and Bangladesh Standard Time to someone in Dhaka.

Thatโ€™s why this converter works with places, not labels. Behind each city is an entry in the IANA time zone database, the same source your phone and laptop use, which records every rule change for that place.

Common questions

Why does the converter ask for a city instead of EST or GMT?

Because abbreviations are ambiguous and change with the seasons. A city tells the converter which daylight saving rules apply on the date you pick, so the answer is right in March as well as in July.

Does it handle daylight saving time?

Yes. Every conversion uses the full rules for that city on the date you choose, including the odd weeks in spring and autumn when Europe and North America are out of step.

What if a time doesnโ€™t exist?

On the night clocks go forward, an hour is skipped (2:30 AM simply never happens in New York on that Sunday). The converter tells you when that happens and moves the time forward. When clocks go back, an hour happens twice; it shows the first one and tells you about the second.

Comparing three or more places? The grid view shows up to five cities side by side, with working hours shaded.
